Open Letter To Brian Cox

There is no doubt in my mind that renowned scientist and TV celebrity Brian Cox is far more intelligent than myself. However when it comes to emotional intelligence, our roles reverse and my intelligence dwarfs his. And not just mine. Every Labour member outraged by his attack on shadow chancellor John McDonnell over his recent declaration that friendship and Tory MPs don’t mix, is an intellectual giant next to Cox.

The fact Cox shared his contempt for this view on twitter, is even more evidence of his lack of emotional intelligence. He claims to be apolitical, yet lacks the imagination to realise many thousands of his followers are suffering, or know people who are suffering under this government’s policies. He can’t stand in their shoes, which is the essence of what makes someone emotionally intelligent. From where he is sitting, as a wealthy celebrity, the country is in pretty good shape. I have the emotional intelligence to understand his lack of understanding to some extent. However I can’t help wondering if he ever walks anywhere, because you don’t have to go far in this country to see desperate people huddled in shop doorways with their sleeping bags and cardboard mattresses. You’d have to be very selective in your news sources to ensure you missed out on discovering how many disabled people have been devastated by cuts, how much our NHS is in crisis, how thousands of elderly and vulnerable people are failing to get the social care they so desperately need, how many people are suffering from mental illnesses with little to no support, how much crime is soaring due to police cuts, how so few young people can ever countenance buying a home, or renting one that’s affordable and of a decent standard, how many students lie awake at night anxious about mounting debt, how many people, working or unable to, have been forced to rely on food banks to survive, and how many desperate souls have taken their lives as a direct result of this government’s cruel and needless austerity agenda.

When I read Cox chastise McDonnell for his views on Tory MPs and friendship (and let’s be clear here, McDonnell stated quite clearly he was referring to friendship, not nods of acknowledgment or a civil chat which are an inevitable part of Westminster society), I wondered if he’d take the same stance if John McDonnell said he couldn’t be friends with a psychopath who got their kicks from torturing people mentally or physically. Because he might as well have said that. Just because Tory MPs wear suits, speak eloquently and can even be charming, doesn’t make them any less heartless or cruel. It doesn’t make the death and destruction they deliberately cause any less heinous. These psychopaths have somehow managed to  convince Cox, and people like him, that they are well meaning, decent human beings. The odd bit of suffering that results from their policies is just a touch of collateral damage, not worthy of scrutiny.

I’m just amazed that someone as intelligent as Cox, believes them.

Cox would benefit from reading some Gramsci or Bourdieu.

Hi Chelley forgive but I’m not sure the emotional intelligence bit is fair, Mr Cox fails to understand the Lefts dislike of Tory policy which usually targets the weak and the vulnerable, people with disabled friends and family have no reason to like the conservative party and every reason to loathe them, the cynical use of PR doublespeak is something I personally find galling PIP, Personal independence payment, sounds great doesn’t it? its just spin designed to make the criteria for getting a disability benefit even higher. Mr Cox probably doesn’t know this, he might not even care but I doubt that he seems a nice likeable bloke

I think it’s worse than not being able to empathise with those directly affected by Tory policies. There’s no way he can’t be aware of the misery, suffering and institutional cruelty imposed by this government. There’s not some illusion that many people in today’s society are well-meaning Tory supporters who don’t know about these ‘unforseen consequences’. THEY KNOW and they are not nice people. Cameron and May’s governments perpetuated the idea that poor, sick and disabled people are scroungers, and so now it’s acceptable and commonplace to believe that these people deserve what they get and that we should treat them even worse to teach them a lesson.

Ill-treatment of the less-fortunate is openly condoned. Prof. Cox is in a privileged position and is not personally harmed by these policies, and may not know every detail or process of what people have to go through. But there is no way he doesn’t know what’s going on, or that there are people who think it’s absolutely fine. If he thinks it’s intellectually dishonest to deny friendship to those who support enforced destitution, homelessness and death upon the population, then he needs to sharpen up his critical thinking skills.

He isn’t more intelligent. Just well educated. Doesn’t make you smart, just gives you lots of knowledge. Intelligence is the ability to use that knowledge – er – intelligently. Which is where Prof Cox falls short…

Brian is clearly intelligent. But the problem with intelligence is that it is frequently channelled in one direction and when one steps away from that direction, one becomes only as intelligent as other normal people. In political terms he has stepped outside of his scientific Channel.

I think Prof Cox should tweet on matters he understands and not be so quick to condemn someone who is principled enough to say why he wouldnt befriend a tory.Speakung out against injustice, and those who have caused it, is one thing we expect from our politicians, or it should be. Keeping silent about the cruel and discriminatory treatment of certain sectors of our society is tantamount to condoning these measures. At best it enables the continuation of this politically motivated subjugation of the poor and the weakest among us. Remember the words ( and I know this isn’t exactly the correct wording, but) – First they came for the trade unionists and I did nothing …
All it takes for evil to flourish is for good ppl to do/say nothing

This is a ludicrous point. Comparing Tory voters to physcopaths? As a life long labour voter, brought up in a small town in north Wales, I know the pain a Tory government has caused. However, not speaking to somebody because that’s how they choose to vote is childish. Then slamming the guy for not being intelligent in the comments, is that a joke? He seems to me like a down to earth guy who speaks sense and I totally agree, if you can’t put political differences aside for the sake of friendship you are the idiot, lacking in emotional intelligence in my opinion. Surrounding yourself completely with people who agree with you will not make you more intelligent just more stovepiped and that’s how we get people like Trump. Get out there, talk to Tory voters, understand their reasonings and show them yours!! That’s the only way this moves forward and the only way Labour will get in to government.

John McDonnell was actually talking about mps not voters. You clearly have missed that. As for my view on voters, read this.

Right, but Cox is referring to anyone of “opposite political persuasion” which is anyone. Quoting your depth of emotional intelligence and then trying to belittle me for missing something is funny too. How can you not see that this type of attitude is exactly why Labour aren’t in power right now? I find this a constant struggle, people with good intentions ostracising anyone who doesn’t agree which is exactly what this situation is.

No, he was attacking JM for saying he can’t be friends with Tory MPs because of the unforgivable way they are making his constituents suffer. He’s saying JD wants a one party state, which is ridiculous. You seem in such a desperate hurry to attack, you keep missing all the relevant points.

There is a big difference between intelligence and common sense, you can be very intelligent and have no common sense this is the catagory Mr Cox falls into.

    Yes, well said.
Unfortunately we are still unable to root out the bogus disability recipients such as my neighbours who have been abusing the system for over 30 years.
The crutches only come out for trips to the shops but are never seen when they are gardening, lugging bags of compost around, vacuuming out the free SUV.
How much have they stolen from the system with their disability living allowance?
With the free cars and all the other add ons that come with this scam must be at least £300,000 each and I have four of them in sight from my house.
